Get Ready for Summer: Your Backyard Revival Checklist ☀️

Summer is just around the corner, and there's no better time to get your outdoor space ready for long, sunny days and relaxed evenings outside. Whether you're planning backyard BBQs, lazy afternoons in the sun or family get-togethers, here's how to make sure your setup is ready to go.

1. Check your BBQ and outdoor kitchen

Summer entertaining starts at the grill. Give your BBQ a thorough once-over, looking for rust, grease build-up and worn parts.

For gas BBQs, clean the grills and flame tamers, check the burners for blockages and inspect the hose for cracks. Brush soapy water over the gas connections and turn the gas on: if bubbles appear, there's a leak, so turn it off and have it repaired before use.

For Grandfire kamados, clear out old ash, check the gasket for wear and stock up on quality lump charcoal.

If burners, flame tamers or other parts need replacing, we stock spare parts for Grandfire BBQs and kamados, and for legacy Buffalo models.

Don't forget your outdoor kitchen. Rinse stainless steel surfaces with fresh water to remove any salt build-up over winter, and wipe them down in the direction of the grain.

2. Clean and refresh outdoor furniture

Winter weather can take its toll. Wipe down frames and tabletops, wash cushion covers and check for mould or damage.

A few new throws or cushions in summer colours can give the whole setting a lift without a big spend.

3. Prepare your shade and shelter

Umbrellas and gazebos can gather dust and mildew over the cooler months. Give them a wash, check the fabric and fittings, and make sure they're securely anchored before the summer winds arrive.

If you're still planning a shaded area, keep an eye out for the Hauland Pergola, coming soon.

4. Restock your outdoor essentials

Nothing stalls a gathering like running out of ice. Before the season starts, run through the basics:

  • Outdoor fridge cleaned and stocked
  • Fuel ready for your fire pit or heater
  • Lighting checked, whether solar or festoon
  • Citronella candles or outdoor scents to help keep the mozzies at bay

5. Test your fire pit or heater

A Flame Engine fire pit or patio heater keeps you outside long after the sun goes down. Give it a clean and a test run before the season gets busy.

Before lighting an outdoor fire this summer, check the current fire season rules for your area at checkitsalright.nz, as restrictions can change quickly in dry weather.

6. Style the space

Planters, tabletop decor and a few thoughtful accessories make your backyard feel like a true extension of your home. It's the small touches that make people want to stay a little longer.
